About the data
Every number on this site comes from public data published by the District of Columbia and the Library of Congress. Here is where each one comes from and the rules we follow.
Independent
This site is independent. It is not affiliated with the DC Government, any Advisory Neighborhood Commission, or any Business Improvement District, and no agency reviews it before publication.
We show the data as DC publishes it, with the comparison and context needed to read it. We don't take positions on projects, candidates or policy. Where the data is thin or imperfect, we say so on the page.

Privacy rules
- No names of private people. Owner, buyer, applicant and inspector names are dropped before anything is published. Elected commissioners' names are public record and are shown.
- 311 to the hundred block. Requests show the type, dates and status, located only to the block (for example, "the 400 block"), never the exact address or the request's text.
- Crime as counts only. Crime reports are counted by offense and never mapped or placed on a block.
- No percentages on small counts. Below 100, a change is shown as a number, because a few reports swing a percentage wildly.
- Old newspapers, screened. Archive clips that mention race, covenants or deed restrictions, and lists of private individuals, are skipped automatically.
Crime counts
Last 30 days| Offense | Now | Before | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Theft/other | 27 | 17 | |
| Theft f/auto | 12 | 8 | |
| Motor vehicle theft | 5 | 8 | |
| Robbery | 3 | 4 | |
| Homicide | 1 | 0 | |
| Assault w/dangerous weapon | 1 | 3 |
Preliminary MPD counts by DC Code offense; not FBI NIBRS totals. These are MPD's preliminary reports: offenses can be reclassified or removed as cases are reviewed, so the counts change after the fact. Counts this small move a lot from month to month, so we don't grade them as rising or easing, and we never map them.
The Petworth boundary
Petworth has no official legal boundary. This site uses the area defined in DC Health Planning Neighborhoods (Open Data DC). Permits, 311 requests and crime counts are included when their location falls inside that outline.
Home sales are the exception: DC's tax records have no coordinates, so sales are matched by tax assessment neighborhood instead. How well the two areas line up →
Some of the ANC districts that cover the area extend past it.
